The industrial areas around the Eemshaven and Delfzijl in the northeast of The Netherlands are growing exponentially and need more fresh water than easily available in the province. Therefore, alternative sources than drinking water are being explored. In this lecture I will talk about the project ‘REuse of GArmerwolde municipal effluent for INdustrial processes’ (REGAIN), with a special focus on three small scale purification technologies that can remove medicine residues from treated municipal effluent: Capillary nanofiltration, BODAC, and Wetlands.
